João Roiz de Castel-Branco

João Roiz de Castel-Branco (* mid-15th century in Castelo Branco , Portugal ; † 1515 there ) was an important Portuguese poet of the Renaissance .

He was a courtier at the court of King Dom Manuel I and worked as an accountant in Guarda at royal homesteads until his death. The married nobleman left behind some verses that appeared in 1516 in the Cancioneiro Geral by Garcia de Resende . His most famous "Cantiga sua Partindo-se" artwork was created by Alain Oulman to Fado converted Portugues. The poem is one of the most beautiful poems in the Portuguese language.

He is buried in the church of Santa Maria in his hometown. A school in Castelo-Branco is named after him. He is also remembered with others in the Parque dos Poetas in Oeiras . In addition, the music ensemble of the city of Castelo-Branco is named after him.
