João Valente

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The reef ( Portuguese , recife ' ) João Valente , also João Leitão or Leton Rock , is located between the Cape Verde islands of Boavista (about 20 nautical miles away) and Maio (about 25 nautical miles away). The north-south about 15 nautical miles long and 9 nautical miles wide coral reef is located on an undersea land ridge that is about 100 meters below sea level and which in turn rises above the sea bed about 1000 meters deep. The flat summit of this seamount is 14 meters below sea level and is probably a former volcanic island ( Guyot ) that was abraded by erosion . Strong surf forms even with moderate winds. When the tide is low, the reef is partially visible on the surface. It was the doom of the English ship "The Lady Burgess", which sank there on April 20, 1806. The high biodiversity of fish species that João Valente has like many other deep-sea mountains has been the subject of scientific studies of the ichthyofauna since 1981 .
