Joël Marc Abati (born April 25, 1970 in Fort-de-France , Martinique ) is a former French handball player . The former national player is a knight of the French Legion of Honor .
Abati played in the period from July 1, 1997 to June 30, 2007, preferably as right winger or right back space at SC Magdeburg in the handball Bundesliga. Before that he was active at Fort de France, US Créteil , Espoir de Floreal and USM Gagny . During his time with the SCM, the left-hander won the Champions League (2002), the German Championship (2001), two club European championships (2001, 2002), the EHF Cup three times (1999, 2001, 2007) and the 2001 Supercup.
After ten successful years, in which the SCM was never placed worse than 6th at the end of a season, Abati moved to the top French club Montpellier HB , where he was initially under contract as an active player for two years and then as a coach in the youth field to get in. As part of his departure from Magdeburg, he was appointed honorary ambassador for the Elbe city. On December 22, 2007 Abati was accepted as the eleventh player in the SC Magdeburg Hall of Fame . With Montpellier HB he won the French championship once (2009).
Abati is one of the most successful handball players in the world. With the French national team he was world champion in 2001, European champion in 2006 and won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games . In 2009 he became world champion again with France .
He is one of the most accurate seven-meter shooters in Bundesliga history.
In 2011 he played again for SC DHfK Leipzig in the two qualifying games for the second division and scored 3 goals each. In March 2014 Abati had another comeback at the French fourth division Olonne Vendée Handball.
