Joachim Knappe (born March 31, 1929 in Munich , † June 5, 2003 in Heidelberg ) was a German biologist. From 1976 until his retirement in 1997 he was director of the Institute for Biological Chemistry at the University of Heidelberg , then until 2000 research group leader at the Biochemistry Center of the University of Heidelberg (BZH).

His father Heinrich Knappe was Kapellmeister and professor for music in Munich.

After leaving school at the Luitpold-secondary school he began in the summer semester 1948 studying at the University of Munich , which he in 1957 with a doctorate on the bound enzyme-carboxylation of biotin in its function as activating CO 2 -Überträger under his supervisor Feodor Lynen ended .

He then worked on the anaerobic α-cleavage of pyruvate .

In 1960 he was called by Georg Wittig as a scientific assistant at the Organic-Chemical Institute of the University of Heidelberg, where he completed his habilitation in 1963 with a thesis on the coenzyme effect of biotin, for which he carried out labeling experiments and chemical and enzymatic modifications. In 1969 he was appointed full professor there. In 1968 he had turned down a call to the chair of biochemistry at the University of Münster .
