Joachim Rudolph (escape assistant)
Joachim Rudolph (born December 25, 1938 in Meseritz ) is a former escape helper on the inner-German border .
Career
Rudolph grew up in East Berlin. After graduating from high school, he was initially denied a degree due to “lack of political commitment”. He completed an apprenticeship as an electrical fitter at the Reichsbahn repair shop in Schöneweide . From 1959 he studied at the Dresden Transport University . In September 1961, shortly after the Wall was built , he and a friend fled to West Berlin via the Tegeler Fließ .
He continued his studies at the Technical University of Berlin , where he joined a student escape helper group that dug an escape tunnel to the east from Bernauer Strasse . On September 14 and 15, 1962, 29 people were able to flee to West Berlin through the tunnel, which was later named Tunnel 29 . He was involved in two other tunnel projects, but they were betrayed.
