Joachim Ulbricht

Joachim Ulbricht (born May 23, 1924 in Pirna ; † November 30, 2017 ) was a German chemist .

Life

After graduating from high school, Ulbricht began to study chemistry in Dresden in 1944, moved to Rostock University in 1946 and graduated from Jena University in 1950 . After his doctorate (1953) in Jena, he worked there for three more years as an assistant and senior assistant in the organic-chemical institute. In his tenure from 1956 at the Institute of fiber research Teltow of the Academy of Sciences Berlin examined Ulbricht kinetics and mechanisms of radical acrylonitrile - polymerization in solution. During this employment, he also supervised diploma and doctoral students from 1960. The results of his investigations were used on a large scale from 1968 in the VEB chemical fiber factory "Friedrich Engels" in Premnitz .

With the habilitation thesis "On the solution polymerization of acrylonitrile" Ulbricht completed his habilitation in 1964 at the TH Leuna-Merseburg and was appointed professor there a year later and in 1969 a full professor. Until his retirement in 1989 he was director and head of various institutes and research projects. In this context he dealt in depth with high polymers and the related polymer materials and process technologies .

The scientific exchange was very important for Ulbricht. He not only lectured at specialist conferences in the GDR and the Eastern Bloc countries, but also worked on international and eastern specialist bodies. He was also involved as a member of the GDR Chemical Society .

Publications and patents

Joachim Ulbricht has produced around 110 publications and several patents from his research. He recorded his experiences in research and teaching in the book "Fundamentals of the Synthesis of Polymers". It was first published in 1978 by Akademie-Verlag and in 1999 as a second improved edition by Wiley-VCH.
