Joachim Voos (born December 26, 1954 , † October 3, 1989 near Sabora near Damascus ) was a German archaeologist from the Near East .

Joachim Voos studied oriental archeology at the University of Halle , the most important teacher was Burchard Brentjes . He received his doctorate in 1986 at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR with a thesis on the subject of studies on the role of statues and reliefs in the Syrohethite cult of the dead during the early Iron Age (approx. 10th – 7th centuries BC) . Voos received practical archaeological training at the academy excavation in Iatrus, Bulgaria . There he was also able to learn the Bulgarian language. Further study trips took him to Tunisia and North Yemen, in Iraq he took part in further excavations and was able to further deepen his knowledge of the Arabic language. After receiving his doctorate, he worked at the Central Institute for Ancient History and Archeology . There he took over the organization of the long-planned archeology youth lexicon , which he wrote over the next two years, primarily with young scientists. It saw its first edition in 1988 and its second edition in 1990.

From 1988 Voos directed the excavations of the academy in Tell Abu Hğaira in northeast Syria. There he benefited from his language skills: Arabic in contact with the locals, whom he met with a lot of sociability, Bulgarian with dam builders who housed the German archaeologists, and English in contact with international scientists. In addition, he was heavily involved in the FDJ and the company union management . On October 3, 1989, Voos and the architect and building researcher Marion Hinkel died in a car accident near Damascus. The planned printing of the dissertation did not materialize in the turmoil of the fall - unlike a children's book about the Phoenicians .
