Wichtendal (foundry family)

The Wichtendal foundry family , also known as Wichtendahl in a different spelling , was a foundry family that lived and worked in Plau am See for four generations from the middle of the 16th century to around 1620 .

Origin and settlement

Nothing is known about the origin of the family. In the wake of improvements at Plau to a defensive fortress from 1538 Duke called Henry V of Mecklenbung Ludwig Wichtendal ( "Master Lodewig") and Champion (gunsmiths) and Rotgießer the fortress. A cannon foundry was built there especially for him. In addition to an annual salary of 25 guilders for himself and his family, Wichtendal received a house on the church square from the Duke.

Evert Wichtendal

As probably one of the cast in the foundry works Plauer only the baptismal font (Fuente) is still Plauer Marienkirche received. This was cast by Evert Wichtendal in 1570 according to his inscription: "EVERT WICHTENDAL ME FIERI FECIT MDLXX".

Ludwig Wichtendal d. J.

The Wichtendal foundry family lived in Plau for four generations. Ludwig Wichtendal d. J. finally left the city at the beginning of the Thirty Years War around 1620 and moved to Gdansk . There he quickly advanced to become an important bronze caster. In 1626 he got the citizenship of Danzig. Numerous cannons and church bells were cast under his direction. In the exhibition, the Spandau Citadel , a cast of it is kartouwe named "CURTIUS" issued by the 1635th An "Osanna" bell that he cast in 1632 for the Marienkirche in Gdansk has been in the Andreaskirche Hildesheim since 1952 .
