Joan Langdon (born August 1, 1951 in Marion (South Carolina) ) is an American mathematician and university professor . She has been Professor of Computer Science at Bowie State University since 1989, specializing in operating systems , networks, and software engineering .

life and work

Sterling Langdon graduated from Hampton University with a bachelor's degree in 1973 and graduated from the College of William & Mary with a Master of Arts in 1975 . In 1977 she became an instructor at Rappahannock Community College and then until 1985 she was a lecturer at Hampton University , where she was also the first director of the Mathematics / Science Laboratory. In 1985 she graduated from Old Dominion University with a Master of Science degree. In 1989 she did her PhD with Mary W. Gray at American University . After receiving her doctorate, she became an associate professor at Bowie State University in 1989. During her tenure at Bowie State University, she held various administrative positions, including director of the Summer Institute in Engineering and Computer Applications (SIECA); Coordinator of the computer science program in the natural sciences, mathematics and computer science department. In 1994 she initiated the Senior Year Progression and Transition Program (SYPAT) and was the program coordinator. She was the founding dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and was named director of the Title III program and director of the Office of Research and Funding Programs in 2006. Langdon has also chaired and / or served on numerous committees at Bowie State University and the University System of Maryland . She has been appointed as an examiner for the Maryland State Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, and the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM). In 1996 she was appointed to the ACM National Program Committee for SIGCSE and is an advisor to the honorary society Alpha Kappa Mu . She has published conference and technical reports, and developed software programs. She is married to Larry L. Langdon, with whom she has four daughters.
