Joan Phipson
Joan Margaret Phipson (born November 16, 1912 in Warrawee, New South Wales in Australia , † April 2, 2003 in Australia) was an Australian author of children's books .
Life
Phipson was an only child and, as a toddler, spent much time traveling with her parents between Australia, England and India . She was educated at Frensham School , where she later worked as a librarian and printer and built Frensham Press . She studied journalism and worked in London for Reuters until the Second World War . From 1941 until her marriage in 1944, she served as a communications officer with the Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force .
After marrying Colin Fitzhardinge , the couple settled west of Sydney in the rural outback . This is where her first children's books were written, which, among other things, describe life and the dangers in this environment. The first, Good Luck to the Rider , was released in 1953 and received the Australian Children's Book of the Year award that same year .
Phipson wrote children's books until the death of her husband, with whom she had two children, in the 1990s. Her books have been translated into French, German, Swedish and Hungarian.
Prizes and awards
- 1953 and 1963: Australian Children's Book of the Year for Good Luck to the Rider and The Family Conspiracy, respectively .
- 1964: New York Herald Tribune Children's Spring Book Festival Award.
- 1983: Honorary diploma from IBBY for The Watcher in the Garden .
- Hit and Run was included in the selection list White Ravens Selection by the International Youth Library in Munich , as well as in the two lists of the American Library Association Notable Books List for Children and Best Books List for Young Adults .
- 1987: Dromkeen Medal for the promotion of children's literature in Australia.
- 1994: Member of the Order of Australia .
