The Steyrer MGV Sängerlust is one of the oldest male choirs in Austria that is still active today. With its currently around 40 active members, it is part of the cultural scene in and around the city of Steyr in Upper Austria.

history

The roots of the Steyr men's choirs singing pleasure go back to the year 1844. It can count itself among Austria's oldest choirs. After four years of existence, the association was officially dissolved in the revolutionary year of 1848 - for allegedly political reasons - and could only come back to life after a two-year break in 1850 under the changed name "Steyrer Liedertafel".

A little later, in 1858, the MGV-Kränzchen was founded . Both, the Liedertafel and Kränzchen, were singing communities of liberal-bourgeois character and, in the best possible cooperation, determined a significant part of Steyr's musical life in the second half of the 19th century.

The direct relationships with contemporary poets and composers deserve a mention. There are handwritten contributions and dedications by Peter Rosegger , Felix Dahn , Enrica von Handel-Mazzetti , as well as those by Wilhelm Kienzl , Richard Heuberger , Thomas Koschat and many others in the club archive . Both clubs had the closest ties to their honorary member Anton Bruckner , who, as is well known, spent part of his decisive creative years in Steyr.

Soon after the turn of the century, the high performance of both clubs was exceeded. The social and cultural side effects of the First World War and the years afterwards pushed for merger. In 1929 the Liedertafel and Kränzchen merged under the name "Steyrer Männergesangsverein".

But the Second World War also took its toll: the club life could no longer be activated to the desired extent. In 1959 they merged with the a cappella choir "Sängerlust" , which remained active even in difficult times .

The choir "Sängerlust" is the younger offspring of this association. Founded in the suburbs in 1886, it remained a table company for decades. It is thanks to the work of the choir director Franz Wegscheider that the cozy group has turned into an ambitious and efficient choir. The choir reached its heyday under Wegscheider's direction: 328 different choral works were studied in the Wegscheider years from 1921 to 1954 and performed in 123 concerts. Max Deschka, his successor, taught the singers the difficult step to contemporary choral literature and thus created the prerequisites for the continuous further development of the association in the present.

The Steyr men's choir, Sängerlust, currently has almost 40 performing members. The choir is characterized by the best camaraderie and the serious effort to achieve exemplary vocal performance. Contemporary composers are always rehearsed for the concerts, in addition to the popular and the tried and tested. The association can be pleased that its modest but seriously thought cultural contribution is being recognized in its hometown of Steyr and elsewhere.

Big singing trips make the association known elsewhere and bring choir friends to Steyr as a return visit. The trips to what was then still communist Romania (1975, 1977), Plauen (1994, 1996), San Benedetto del Tronto (2004), Vorarlberg (1998), Belgium (2000), Dresden (1994), Berlin (2004 ) deserve special mention ), Graz (2004) and most recently Hamburg (2008). A high point in club life was participation in the gala concert on the 100th anniversary of Anton Bruckner's death in the famous Great Hall of the Wiener Musikverein (1996) and participation in the opening of the Wiener Festwochen on Rathausplatz (1997).

  • 2009 Opening of the Steyr Music Festival with other choirs and the Beethoven Symphony Orchestra Vienna Beethoven's 9th Symphony
  • 2010 Opening of the Steyr Music Festival with Marc Antoine Charpentier - Te Deum .

On the occasion of its 170th anniversary, the Steyrer MGV Sängerlust founded the Steyr singt initiative in order to offer a future-oriented platform for musicians (especially choral singing). The specially founded project choir "Steyr singt" performed a gala concert on November 8, 2014 with the South Bohemian Chamber Philharmonic Budweis and with works by Anton Bruckner (Inveni David), Martin L. Fiala (Give your life a dream - world premiere), John Rutter ( Magnificat ) and Karl Jenkins ( The Armed Man - A Mass for peace ).

In the course of its many years as a club, the Steyrer MGV Sängerlust has accumulated a considerable amount of sheet music, valuable manuscripts and objects that were stored in the attic of the clubhouse until 2002 and were thus exposed to harmful environmental influences.

Thanks to the generous support of a Steyr sponsor, the association was given two rooms, which, after extensive adaptations by the singing brothers, now hold the entire archive with 4,000 music notations, manuscripts, etc. a. by Anton Bruckner, Max Bruch, Wilhelm Kienzl and other composers and poets. About 50 pictures from the eventful past of the association adorn the walls of the rooms.

In keeping with the times, the entire recording was made with EDP, including all concerts and performances of the last 160 years and a comprehensive club history. The files currently contain approx. 9000 data records.
