Martin L. Fiala (born December 28, 1964 in St. Pölten ) is an Austrian composer , choir and orchestra conductor, music teacher and musicologist.

biography

Martin L. Fiala first attended the federal high school in Steyr , switched to the music high school in Linz and graduated from the music high school in Linz in 1985. Fiala studied musicology at the University of Vienna ( graduation as Master of Philosophy - with distinction), instrumental pedagogy with a focus on composition and arrangement at the Anton Bruckner Private University Linz (graduation as Master of Arts - with distinction) and at the Bruckner Conservatory in LinzComposition (diploma 1996), music theory (diploma 1989) and teaching violin (state teaching qualification examination 1988). From 2002 to 2004 he completed the music & media course at Upper Austria. Regional Music Directorate, he received the certificate in 2004. He is currently completing a doctorate in musicology at the University of Vienna (planned graduation 2017) with the following dissertation topic: Life and work of the composer P. Sebastian Ertel (also: Erthel, Ertl, Ertelius, around 1550 / 60 Mariazell, Styria - 13.7.1618 Garsten, Upper Austria.). The importance of his music in Austrian music history and in an analytical comparison with European composers of his time.

Martin L. Fiala undertook ethnological study trips to South America (Brazil), the Caribbean (Cuba), Asia (Thailand, Indonesia) and North Africa and has been a music school teacher (violin, piano, choir education, string orchestra, music theory) since 1989. Since 2003 he has been teaching composition at the Steyr Music School. He composes for traditional instruments as well as electronic, electroacoustic and computer music .

Prizes and awards

  • 2016 - Upper Austrian Performance Award - Science category. 3rd prize for the research project: The life and work of the composer P. Sebastian Ertel (also: Erthel, Ertl, Ertelius, around 1550/60 Mariazell, Styria - 13.7.1618 Garsten, Upper Austria). The importance of his music in Austrian music history and in an analytical comparison with European composers of his time.
  • 2014 - Honorary certificate from the Upper Austria Choir Association in recognition of the achievements and services to the cultural life in Steyr.
  • 2014 - The grade in silver of the Upper Austria Choir Association in recognition of the outstanding services to the choir.
  • 2010 - Award of the Golden Merit Medal of the Republic of Austria by Federal President Dr. Heinz Fischer.
  • 2008 - by Governor Dr. Josef Pühringer in recognition of many years of service to Upper Austria. Appointed consultants for music care.
  • 1996 - Anton Bruckner Festival Medal for special services to the choir in the Bruckner year 1996 (Upper Austrian - Salzburg Singing Association).
  • 1994 - The bronze mark of the Upper Austrian-Salzburg Singing Association in recognition of the outstanding services to the choir.
  • 1993 - Art grant from the city of Linz in recognition and promotion of achievements in the field of music (composition).
  • 1992 - Final round participant (3 candidates) together with Helmut Gugerbauer in one of the four advertised categories at the international competition for the Midi-Go-Award 1992 (Hamburg / Frankfurt) with the composition "Jesus von Nazareth".
  • 1991 - Scholarship from the Academic Senate of the University of Vienna.
  • 1990 - Final round participant in the song competition "Singt mir vom Leben - Liedlich Lebendiges" in Sankt Pölten / Lower Austria (Aktion Leben / Musica e vita).
  • 1990 - Helmut Schiff donation (Linz, for composition).
  • 1988 - First Austrian Youth Prize (Vienna) for composition, as well as a special prize from the Province of Upper Austria with the compositions: "limitless", "Jesus of Nazareth", "In the midst of all transience" and the like. a.
  • 1986 - First Austrian Youth Prize (Vienna) for composition, as well as a special prize from the Province of Upper Austria with: "The last seven days ..." - oratorio.
