Joan Vinyoli i Pladevall (born July 3, 1914 in Barcelona , † November 30, 1984 ibid) was a Catalan poet.

life and work

After the early death of his father, a doctor, he spent his childhood in difficult financial circumstances. The summer stays in Santa Coloma de Farners , made possible by a former colleague of the father's, were a ray of hope .

After completing a commercial apprenticeship, Vinyoli received a job in the administration of the Labor publishing house at the age of 16, where he remained employed until his retirement. He wrote his first poetic texts in the early 1930s. Of great importance to him was the reading of The Notes of Malte Laurids Brigge by Rainer Maria Rilke in a Catalan translation, through which a lifelong examination of his work began. Vinyoli's transmission of a Rilke poem caught the attention of Carles Riba , who invited the young poet to meetings in his apartment, thus introducing him to the literary scene. In 1937 Vinyoli's first volume of poetry, Primer desenllaç, was published .

The Spanish Civil War interrupted all cultural activities, Vinyoli served in a recruiting center for the Republican army. From the mid-1940s he began to work intensively on literature (three volumes of poetry, readings, participation in juries and participation in circles).

After the publication of El Callat [The Silent] (1956), a long period of crisis followed, in which Vinyoli only published one volume ( Realitats [Realities]). Poetologically, he left his late symbolist position and approached the socio-critical direction that was decisive at the time, which he did not, however, join.

With the volume of poetry Tot és ara i res [Everything is now and nothing] (1970) the last and at the same time most important phase of his work begins. Until his death, Vinyoli published a further eleven volumes; his poetry, in which existential thoughts, confessional notations, everyday considerations and erotic moments are combined, has received increasing attention from both critics and younger authors.

Joan Vinyoli, whose health had been severely affected by heavy alcohol consumption since the 1970s, died on November 30, 1984. In the last year of his life, two volumes of poetry and a volume with translations of Rilke poems were published, which was followed posthumously (1985) by a second.
