Life

Miquel Martí i Pol grew up in Roda de Ter, a village in the province of Barcelona . He came from a simple family, attended the Spanish-language elementary school and began working at the age of 14 in the Cala Tecla Sala textile factory, where his mother was also employed. A pulmonary tuberculosis forced the 19-year-olds for a year of bed rest, which allowed him to write and to read, above all. He later translated what he had read into Catalan. His first volume of poetry Paraules al vent was awarded the “Ossa Menor” literary prize in 1954. In the 1970s, Nova Cançó songwriters such as Maria del Mar Bonet , Ramon Muntaner , Lluís Llach , Celdoni Fonoll and Rafael Subirachs set his poems to music and ensured his popularity.

He became a member of the Partit Socialista Unificat de Catalunya (PSUC), which had to operate underground during the Franco dictatorship .

In the early 1970s he contracted multiple sclerosis , which later prevented him from speaking, so that he could only communicate with rudimentary articulation and an electric typewriter. In 1977 a democratic form of government was restored in Spain. At a "Semana Popular" in Osona in 1978 , his political commitment was recognized by artists such as Antoni Tàpies , Vicent Andrés Estellés , Pere Quart , Joan Brossa , Joan Vinyoli , Ramon Puyol and Xavier Bru de Sala .

He has translated works by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry , Simone de Beauvoir , Guillaume Apollinaire , Gustave Flaubert , Emile Zola , Jean Racine , Joris-Karl Huysmans and Roland Barthes into Catalan.

In 1990 he wrote the Parlavà suite in the house of the musician Lluís Llach , from which Llach and the German actress Hanna Schygulla performed for the Diada de Sant Jordi 2010 in the Berlin Kulturbrauerei .

The book of loneliness was written between 1995 and 1997 and was dedicated to the professional footballer from Barça , Pep Guardiola and his wife Cristina Serra. Both cultivated “a poetic friendship” with the poet and visited him in Roda de Ter. Guardiola has occasionally read Martí's poems in public. Guardiola referred to the fact that he had also done this as a coach at FC Barcelona in front of his team at a reading in the Literaturhaus Munich in June 2015 in the field of modern fairy tales.
