Joanikij ( Bulgarian Йоаникий Сливенски ) born as Ivan Georgiev Nedeltschew (also Ivan Georgiev Nedeltchev written bulg Иван Георгиев Неделчев;. * 2. March 1939 in Pet Mogili , Oblast Sliven ) is a Bulgarian Orthodox priest and Metropolitan of the Diocese of Sliven .

biography

Joanikij was born on March 2, 1939, his real name was Ivan Georgiev Nedeltschew in Pet Mogili.

In 1958 he completed his studies at the Theological Seminary of the Tscherepisch Monastery . On April 1, 1961, he became a monk. In 1964 he graduated from the Sofia Spiritual Academy and went to Moscow Spiritual Academy to specialize .

On August 1, 1968, he was appointed Protosingel of the Diocese of Sliven and on November 24, 1968, Archimandrite of the Diocese of Stara Sagora . Another theological study followed in 1970 in Bern (Switzerland). After his return to Bulgaria, he became coadjutor of the Metropolitan of Sliven from December 1971 to April 20, 1975 , during which he was ordained a priest and vicar of the diocese.

On March 23, 1980 Joanikij was elected bishop and on April 20 was appointed Metropolitan of Sliven.

After the death of Patriarch Maxim on November 6, 2012, Joanikij was proposed by a group of bishops as deputy chairman of the Holy Synod, but he turned down a candidacy in writing. On November 10, 2012, he took part in the election of Metropolitan Kiril as deputy chairman of the Holy Synod and refused to participate in the subsequent boycott of the synod by the group of bishops around Kalinik and Nikolai. Thus, Joaniki personally helped to overcome the leadership crisis of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church after the death of Patriarch Maxim.
