Kiril , also Kiril of Varna and Veliki Preslav ( Bulgarian Кирил or Кирил Варненски и Великопреславски ) secular name Bogomil Petrov Kovachev (also Bogomil Petrov Kovachev written Bulgarian Богомил Петров Ковачев * 8. June 1954 in Zarew Brod , Bulgaria ; † 9 July 2013 ) was a Bulgarian Orthodox clergyman, Metropolitan of the Diocese of Varna and Veliky Preslav of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church , member of the Holy Synod and former hegumen of the Trojan Monastery (1986-1989).

Life

Bishop Kiril was repeatedly criticized, be it because of his handling of consumer goods, or because of the poorly clarified relationship with the Russian KGB .

After the death of the Bulgarian patriarch Maxim , Kiril temporarily headed the diocese of Sofia . On July 9, 2013, he drowned while snorkeling in the Black Sea . The further circumstances of his death are still unclear.
