Flower still life
attributed to Joannes Baer

Joannes Baers , also Joannes Baer or Johannes Baers , (possibly before 1600 in Utrecht ; † after 1641 in Utrecht) was a Dutch painter.

Nothing is known about the origins and training of Joannes Baers. He is documented for the first time as a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp in 1618/19 . Soon after, however, he seems to have worked again in Utrecht, where he is documented from 1624 and presumably died sometime after 1641. According to the current state of knowledge, he seems to have mainly worked as a still life painter, but two genre paintings by him are also mentioned in an Amsterdam inventory from 1638 . He is probably identical with Jan Baers, who can also be documented, who is said to have painted floral still lifes in the style of Ambrosius Bosschaert and Balthasar van der Ast .

Joannes Baers is one of the lesser known Dutch masters whose work is almost unknown. It was not until the middle of the 20th century that he became tangible as an artist when he found a signed flower still life dated 1629 . Based on this work, a few other, quite similar works were ascribed to him before two more signed still lifes were discovered. These new discoveries, however, raise doubts as to whether he really could have painted all of the works previously attributed to him only from a stylistic point of view.
