Joaquín Gutiérrez Heras

Joaquín Gutiérrez Heras (born September 28, 1927 in Tehuacán , † March 3, 2012 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican composer.

Life

He broke off his studies in architecture at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) because of his decision to pursue music. After having acquired his skills autodidactically , he studied from 1950 at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música under Rodolfo Halffter and Blas Galindo, among others . In 1952 he went to Paris with Olivier Messiaen and others as a French government scholarship holder . Another grant from the Rockefeller Foundation enabled him to continue his education at the Juilliard School in New York. Back in Mexico, he joined the group "Nueva Música de México" ( German : New Music of Mexico ).

In addition to his compositional work, he was a university lecturer at various institutions, lectured at events and published several specialist articles. Between 1965 and 1992 he mainly composed film , ballet and theater music. He has received several awards for his work. Gutiérrez is among other things a member of the Academia de Artes .
