life and work

Joaquín Nin-Culmell was the son of the Cuban-Spanish composer and concert pianist Joaquín Nin y Castellanos and the Danish Rosa Culmell y Vigaraud, who had French and Cuban ancestors. His sister was the writer Anaïs Nin . When Nin was five years old, the father left the family. The mother then moved to New York with her three children .

Nin first studied piano at the Schola Cantorum in Paris and composition with Paul Dukas at the Paris Conservatory. In his private life he also studied piano with Alfred Cortot . From 1930 to 1934 Nin studied composition with Manuel de Falla in Granada.

From 1944 he taught at Williams College in Massachusetts and later at the University of California at Berkeley. Nin also taught temporarily at the Acadèmia Marshall in Barcelona.

Nin's compositional work is rooted on the one hand in old Spanish music as well as in Spanish folklore of the 19th century. Of his Impressionist compositions, the following deserve special mention: two piano concertos from 1939 and 1946, the Cuban songs from 1952, six variations on a theme by Lluís de Milà for guitar from 1954, the 12 Catalan folk songs from 1957, three Mallorcan songs, the opera Celestina from 1965, the ballet El burlador de Sevilla and the orchestral work Diferencias from 1962.

Nin published, among other things, The music of Cuba (Washington DC 1943).
