life and work

Maria Canals describes in her memoir that her father Joaquim Canals was born into difficult family circumstances. As a young woman, his mother had to marry a man she did not love for economic reasons. When Joaquim Canals became the family owner in 1859 and he was one year old, the father left the family and emigrated to the United States . At the age of five, Joaquim Canals was seized with an irrepressible interest in music, much like the Maria Canals reports of herself. His mother noticed the boy's urge and made it possible for him to study music, which eventually led to training as an organist in the training of dozens of pianists at the Barcelona Conservatory. Joaquim Canals trained numerous pianists, including Tomàs Buxó , Dolor's wife , Leopold Cardona and Joan Estany . His most important pupil, however, was his daughter Maria Canals , whom he refused to teach as a small child for fear of being overwhelmed and who he only taught piano privately from the age of 7 and from the age of 11 at the conservatory. Maria Canals then says that against the background of this family history - conveyed by her father and grandmother - she had found the strength to make Barcelona the capital of piano playing in the Concurs Internacional Maria Canals piano competition and to make young piano talents from all over the world to promote.
