Jocelyn Gordon Whitehead

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jocelyn Gordon Whitehead (born November 25, 1895 ; died July 5, 1954 in Montreal ) was a former McGill University student and boxer blamed for the death of the magician Harry Houdini .

It was part of Houdini's stunts that he let himself be punched in the stomach without being impressed by his abdominal muscles. Whitehead's statement has come down to us. On October 22, 1926, Jocelyn Gordon Whitehead and Samuel J. Smilovitz visited Houdini in the locker rooms of the Princess Theater in Montreal. Whitehead reports that he dealt a lighter blow to Houdini and, at Houdini's request, a heavier blow to the stomach in the left half above the navel. Houdini died on October 31, 1926 of complications from a ruptured appendicitis.

Whitehead was never charged. However, he signed an admission of guilt so that Houdini's widow, Bess, could receive $ 50,000 instead of $ 25,000 from the insurance company.

He is buried in the Hawthorn-Dale Cemetery in Montreal (Lot 188, Grave 75).
