The mistletoe glass winged ( Synanthedon loranthi ) is a butterfly from the family of the glass winged (Sesiidae).
features
The moths reach a wingspan of 14 to 22 millimeters. The front coxa are yellow up to two-thirds of their length. In the forewings, the outer transparent area is wider than it is high and the discal spot on the hindwings is small. In the males there are yellow rings on the second, fourth and seventh segments of the abdomen , in the females on segments two, four and six. The saccus is straight or only slightly concave at the end. The bald area on the ventral edge of the valves is indistinct and small. The crista sacculi of the valves cannot be seen. The female genital fittings are no different from Synanthedon cephiformis .
distribution
The mistletoe glass winged bird is common in Central , Western and Southern Europe.
biology
The mistletoe-winged bird inhabits forests in which Viscum or Loranthus species thrive. These include parks and forest-steppe habitats. The food plants include various types of Viscum and oak mistletoe ( Loranthus europaeus ). The caterpillars live under the bark or in the wood for 1.5 years and pupate in a cocoon under the bark. The moths can be found from May to August, although observation is difficult because the species' way of life in the treetops makes it difficult to detect them.
