The yoke thyme ( Thymus zygis ) is a plant from the genus of thyme ( Thymus ) in the family of Labiatae . The yoke thyme is officinal .

features

The yoke thyme is a strongly aromatic, fragrant and densely haired dwarf shrub that reaches heights of 10 to 30 centimeters. Its branches are ascending to upright and woody. The leaves are sitting, linear to elliptical , 6 to 10 millimeters long, 1 millimeter wide and rolled up at the edge . They are gray-green, dotted with glands, white felt underneath and at least more or less ciliate at the base. The median nerve is clearly visible. 6 or more flowers are arranged in pseudo whorls that form elongated, interrupted and spiked inflorescences. The calyx is 3 to 4 millimeters long, two-lipped and has 10 to 13 nerves. The top 3 teeth are as wide as they are long and not eyelashes, the bottom 2 are sub-like and eyelashes. The crown is whitish, two-lipped and about 4 millimeters long. The 4 stamens and the stylus protrude from the calyx

Flowering time is from July to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14, 28 or 58.

Occurrence

The yoke thyme occurs in Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Algeria in maquis and on dry slopes.

Systematics

One can distinguish three subspecies:

  • Thymus zygis subsp. gracilis (Boiss.) R.Morales : It occurs in southern and southeastern Spain, Morocco and Algeria.
  • Thymus zygis subsp. sylvestris (Hoffmanns. & Link) Cout. : It occurs from western and central Portugal to central and southern Spain.
  • Thymus zygis subsp. zygis : It occurs from northern Portugal to northern and north-central Spain.
