Career

Büchs studied chemical engineering at the Technical University of Munich , which he graduated with a diploma in 1981. 1982 to 1984 followed a stay abroad in Japan at the Institute for Physical and Chemical Research ( RIKEN ) and the University of Tokyo . His doctoral thesis was then carried out at the Research Center Jülich at the Institute for Biotechnology II. He received his doctorate in 1988. From 1988 to 1996 Büchs went to BASF in industryto Ludwigshafen, where he worked in the field of bioprocess engineering. During this time, Büchs was head of the pilot plant for biotechnology from 1993 to 1996. In 1996, he was offered the new chair for bioprocess engineering at RWTH Aachen University.

Focus of work

Büchs works in the field of developing new biotechnological production processes. These include, for example, the topics of fermentation technology and enzyme systems.

Award

In 1996, Büchs received the Arnold Eucken Prize from the Society for Process Engineering and Chemical Engineering in the Association of German Engineers (VDI). In 2018 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Osaka University .
