Jochen Gros

Jochen Gros (* 1944 in Neuhof / Taunusstein) is a German design theorist and product designer. In the mid-1970s he coined the term extended functionalism and played a key role in developing a theory of product language (Offenbach approach). Since 1990 he has been interested in the theory and design of a pictographic sign language (Icon Language).

Gros studied mechanical engineering and psychology in Frankfurt am Main from 1964 to 1971. From 1971 to 1972, among others, with Siegfried Maser at the Institute for Environmental Planning (IUP) Ulm, from 1972 to 1973 at the Braunschweig University of Art. Degree: Dipl. Designer specializing in product design . From 1972 to 1973 Gros worked on a trend research project for the design department of Siemens AG . In 1974 he was appointed professor for design theory at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main (HfG-OF) (retired in 2004).

In 1974 Gros initiated the student working group “Des-In” at the HfG-Offenbach. Their goal was to use ( recycling ) waste products to design, produce and sell new products. The focus here was on developing an independent “recycling aesthetic”.

In 1976 Gros conceived the "Product and Environment" exhibition for the International Design Center Berlin (IDZ) . Further exhibition contributions, lectures and u. a. a television report on "Memphis" design for ARD. From 1998 to 2004 Gros headed several research projects for the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) on design for production with computer-controlled machines "Art-Customization, NewArts and Crafts - Sustainable Regional Development".
