Joe Daniels

Joe Daniels (* 9. March 1908 in Zeerust , South Africa ; † 2. July 1993 in Northwood , Middlesex , England ) was a British jazz - drummer and bandleader.

Daniels grew up in England and learned to play drums when he was eleven; he played in Frascati's restaurant in London that same year . He began to work as a professional musician in the early 1920s, played with Harry and Burton Lesters Cowboy Syncopators and on cruise ships of the Cunard Liners at the age of 14 , then with Al Kaplan and Sid Roy ( Harry Roy's brother ). Finally, in 1926, he founded his own band with trumpeter Max Goldberg . During this time he also worked with Fred Elizalde and Al Tabor for seven years with Harry Roy. Around 1930 he successfully recorded with Billy Mason under the band name Joe Daniel's Hot Shots , u. a. with the song Avalon . With the band he was often heard on BBC radio shows, in 1938 he went on a Scandinavian tour with the Hot Shots .

After the outbreak of World War II, he was drafted into the Royal Air Force , where he organized an Air Force band and shows for troop entertainment. After the end of the war and during the 1950s to the 1970s, he played with smaller ensembles with clarinetist Dave Shepherd and trumpeter Alan Wickham ("Ultra Modern Swing", "Crashin 'Through" and "Beatin' on the Washboard") as well in big bands . He also recorded Dixieland for Parlophone under the name Washboard Joe and the Scrubbers . In 1984 he worked with Denny Wright and Tiny Winters in the comedy film Top Secret! With. In the late 1980s he suffered a stroke that ended his career.
