history

The original name of the farm on which the city was built was Sebatlani (German: Dusty Place). It belonged to Caspar Hendrik Coetzee, who bought it in 1858. The farm was later renamed Hazenjacht and finally Hazia or Hazeah . Coetzee had a church and fort built on the site in 1864 , but died during the construction work. In 1866 the farm was transferred to Diederik Jacobus Coetzee, who from 1867 sold parcels of the farm as building land, even before permission to build a settlement was granted.

The place name was originally Coetzee's Rust (Coetzee's rest); it was later abbreviated to Zeerust . In 1936 Zeerust was granted municipal status. The municipality of Jacobsdal had previously existed around ten kilometers south. Zeerust was soon more important than Jacobsdal as it was on several important traffic routes.

The most widely spoken languages in Zeerust are Setswana and Afrikaans . The community Zeerust was after the end of apartheid in Ramotshere Moiloa renamed. It was named after a local chief who fought against apartheid.

Economy and Transport

Zeerust is an important trading center for the area. The area is characterized by large livestock farms. Wheat, corn, tobacco and citrus fruits are grown. Lead and chrome ores are also mined in the area . The N4 runs through Zeerust in an east-west direction and is the city's most important traffic route. Other highways lead from Zeerust to Gaborone and Mahikeng . Zeerust is located on the Johannesburg – Mahikeng railway line , which is no longer served as scheduled. However, special trains such as the Pride of Africa continue to run via Zeerust.
