Joe R. Campa Jr. (* in Lynwood , California ) is a former Master Chief Petty Officer of the US Navy and was the 11th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) from 2006 to 2008 .

Military career

Campa enlisted in the US Navy on June 2, 1980. He completed basic training as well as special basic training as a paramedic at the Hospital Corps "A" School in San Diego . He graduated with honors from the US Navy Senior Enlisted Academy , graduated from the US Army Sergeants Major Academy in May 2003, and completed the Command Sergeants Major course . He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Excelsior College . In March 2006, he earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategy Studies from Naval War College .

Its uses included a .: on the USS Ogden (LPD-5) in San Diego, the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, in the US 7th Marine Regiment of the 1st US Marine Division of the US Marine Corps in Camp Pendleton in California, the Naval Hospital in Long Beach , US 3rd Marine logistics group of the Fleet Marine Force in Okinawa ( Japan ), in the 1st Marine logistics group during the Second Gulf War , on the USS Comstock (LSD-45) in San Diego and the naval training center in Great Lakes , Illinois .

Campa was selected for the Command Master Chief program in May 1999 and was transferred to the USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54) in Yokosuka, Japan, where he served as Command Master Chief from November 1999 to June 2002.

During its deployment, the ship was used in the Arabian Sea in support of Operation Enduring Freedom . From June 2003 to February 2005, he served as Command Master Chief on the USS Frank Cable (AS-40) , stationed in Apra Harbor , Guam . He then served as Command Master Chief of the Joint Task Force Guantanamo , which runs the Camp Delta internment camp in Cuba .

On July 10, 2006 Campa was under the Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Michael G. Mullen the 11th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy and thus the highest ranking NCO in the US Navy.

In November 2008 Campa announced that he would be vacating his post on December 13 and retiring on April 1, 2009. With a term of two years and five months, Campa is the MCPON with the shortest tenure. He was succeeded by Rick West .

His awards include a: the Navy Distinguished Service Medal , the Meritorious Service Medal with double oak leaves, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with quadruple oak leaves, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with six oak leaves.
