Lake Bluff is a place ( village ) in Lake County , Illinois . In 2000 the town, founded in 1895, had 6,056 inhabitants. On the northern edge of Lake Bluff is the important Navy training camp Naval Station Great Lakes .
history
The first European settlers to claim land in the Lake Bluff area were John and Catherine Cloes (1836). In 1855, the first railroad line in Lake County was completed; it connected the cities of Chicago and Waukegan . A train station was built in Lake Bluff. The small settlement was called Rockland at that time, but was soon given the name it still bears today. The formal establishment of the Village of Lake Bluff followed in 1895.

The place is on the shores of Lake Michigan in the area of the so-called North Shore . The place has an area of 10.5 km² (4.1 square miles). Lake Bluff is bordered to the north by Naval Station Great Lakes and the Arden Shores, to the west by the town of Knollwood and to the south by Lake Forest .

At the 2000 census , Lake Bluff had 6,056 residents, 2,118 households, and 1,743 families. The population density was 575.9 inhabitants per km ². The density of the 2,202 residential units was 209.4 per km². 95.29% of the population were white, 0.51% African American , 0.03% Native Americans , 0.03% Pacific islanders , 0.23% other, and 0.59% were of mixed race. The proportion of Hispanics or Latinos was 1.19%.
Children under the age of 18 lived in 45.7% of the 2,118 households. Married couples lived together in 74.3% of all households. 6.4% of all households were led by a woman who was either unmarried or lived without her husband. There were no families in 17.7% of all households. 15.8% of all households were single households. There was only one person 65 years of age or older living in 6.3% of all households. The mean household size was 2.86 people, the mean family size 3.21 people.
The median income was $ 114,521 per household and $ 124,674 per family. Males had a median income of $ 93,794 and females $ 50,352. The median income per capita was $ 54,824. 1.1% of people and 0.7% of families lived below the poverty line.
