The happy mother (watercolor Z 1043) The watercolor shows a young reading mother in simple proportions. However, the elegant clothes of the boy in the foreground suggest that the picture was originally created in a different setting.

Life

Johann Anton de Peters was born as the son of the scribe and miniature painter Wilhelm Anton Peters, from whom he also learned painting. From 1756 de Peters's stay in Paris is documented, where he became a member of the Académie de Saint-Luc . Peters was ennobled through contacts with the court, first documented in 1764 by entries in the journal of the engraver JG Wille . De Peters married the miniature painter Elisabeth Gouel de Villebrun in Paris . From 1768 de Peters called himself court painter Christian VII , the King of Denmark, from whom he received the commission for four miniature portraits during a trip abroad in Paris. During this time, de Peters was also active as a collector and dealer of art and publisher of music.

The French Revolution brought the end of a well-off life for de Peters, he became impoverished and finally returned to his hometown Cologne in 1791. Since de Peters only received a few orders from his patron Ferdinand Franz Wallraf , among others , he died in poverty.

Knowledge of de Peters' work is based primarily on the holdings of the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud in Cologne , since Wallraf acquired the entire estate. Many works that are proven by engravings are considered lost. In addition to a few paintings and miniatures, mainly drawings and graphics have been preserved. Part of this extensive collection of more than 680 drawings made in Paris will be presented in the summer of 2012 in the Graphisches Kabinett of the Cologne Museum. The special exhibition was developed under the direction of the Berlin art historian Gerrit Walczak with students from the Art History Institute of the University of Cologne.
