Life

Johann August Schnittspahn came from a family of court gardeners. His great-grandfather was a gardener in Sachsenhausen. Grandfather Balthasar was a landgrave gardener in the so-called Biengarten in the north of Darmstadt. His father Bernhard was a court gardener in Darmstadt during the reign of Landgrave Ludwig IX. (Hessen-Darmstadt) (1719–1790).

Johann August was born in Darmstadt in 1763. He was the first gardener of the botanical garden, which was located in the moat of Darmstadt Castle from 1814 and was laid out at the suggestion of Johannes Hess .

It was left to him "if his own official business should keep him from using his son who had been his assistant" (Ziegler 1977, p. 208). This was his eldest son Gottfried Schnittspahn (* 1790 † February 20, 1833). Gottfried Schnittspahn was initially a Bauknecht in Darmstadt and on October 12, 1822 he became a clerk and trainee at the senior building management.
