Johann Baptist Gumpenhuber

Johann Baptist Xaver Gumpenhuber (born October 17, 1710 in Vienna ; †? In England ?) Was an Austrian Pantaleon virtuoso and composer.

Gumpenhuber was the second son of the Austrian dancer and choreographer Tobias Gumpenhuber (1670–1751) and the younger brother of the dancer and chronicler Philipp Tobias Gumpenhuber (1708–1770). He was the most prominent student of Pantaleon Hebenstreit , the inventor of the Pantaleon. In 1755 he was engaged by the Russian diplomat Alexei Petrovich Bestuschew-Ryumin in Saint Petersburg , where he took part in concerts and operas and was admired for " his amazing accuracy in his practice, uncommon cadenzas, capricci and trills ". In 1756 he traveled to England, where his trace is lost. He composed concerts and caprices for the Pantaleon, which have not survived.
