Johann Bogislaw (Schleswig-Holstein-Norburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Bogislaw (born September 30, 1629 - † December 17, 1679 ) was Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg from 1658 to 1669 .

Life

Johann (or Hans) Bogislaw was the only son of Friedrich von Norburg from his first marriage to Juliane von Sachsen-Lauenburg (* December 26, 1589, † December 1, 1630). In 1659 he inherited the heavily indebted duchy. His younger half-siblings were excluded from the administration, but according to the inheritance contract of January 19, 1659, they should receive annual deputate payments. His stepmother Eleonore von Anhalt-Zerbst received the Østerholm estate as a widow's residence.

As a separate gentleman , he had no political power, but was entirely from the Danish King Friedrich III. dependent. So his duchy was drawn into the Second Northern War through no fault of his own . In 1657 the country was occupied and looted by Swedish troops. In 1660 Danish troops were quartered in Norburg. In addition, the Danish king demanded high taxes from the ducal subjects to finance his wars. Since these could not pay, the Duke was personally held responsible and had to take out loans to settle the claims.

In 1665 his Norburg Castle , a three-winged half-timbered building erected by his grandfather Johann the Younger , burned down with the entire inventory. Johann Bogislaw could no longer service any debts at all. In 1667 bankruptcy proceedings were opened, which ended in 1669 with the duchy being confiscated from the crown.

Egen Kirke

Johann Bogislaw stayed at Norburg and lived on the small pension the king paid him. He died unmarried in 1679 with no heirs and was buried in the church of Eken (Danish: Egen) on Alsen . His half-brother Christian August also died unmarried in 1687 as an English naval officer. With Ernst Leopold , the son of his other half-brother Rudolf Friedrich, the older Norburg line died out in 1722. His sister was Elisabeth Sophie Marie of Schleswig-Holstein-Norburg , first Duchess of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön by marriage , then Duchess of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel.

After Johann Bogislaw's death, the king gave the duchy to August (1635–1699), the son of Plön's Duke Joachim Ernst .
