Johann Christian Quandt the Elder

Johann Christian Quandt (the Elder; born November 18 . Jul / 29 November 1704 greg. In Wolferschwenda , Thuringia , † March 1750 in Urvaste , Livonia ) was a German clergyman and member of the Moravian Church .

life and work

Johann Christian Quandt studied theology at the University of Jena until 1732 . Already during his studies he made contacts with the Moravian Brethren.

From 1732 Quandt was pastor in Urvaste, Livonia. In 1737 he published his first book in Estonian with three translations under the title Kolm kaunist Waggausse Eenkojut .

In 1740 Quandt actively joined the Moravian Movement in the Baltic States , which gained a foothold in Estonia and Livonia from 1737 . A year later he founded the Moravian Brethren in Urvaste. It became one of the leading Moravian institutions in Livonia in the 18th century.

In 1741 Quandt published a Herrnhut hymn book in the South Estonian language , the Moravians' first Estonian -language work. Under his guidance, some Estonian farmers were trained as Herrnhut scholars ( Mango Hans , Michel Ignatius , Adam Koljo ).

Quandt's son, Johann Christian Quandt the Younger (1733-1822), continued his father's Herrnhut work in Germany.
