Johann Friedrich Vulpius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Friedrich Vulpius (born November 12, 1725 in Weimar ; † March 29, 1786 in Weimar) was an official archivist and registrar as well as the father of Christian August Vulpius and Christiane Vulpius . His father Johann Friedrich Vulpius sen. was a lawyer in Weimar.

Life

In 1746 he began to study law in Jena , which he had to abandon in 1748 for financial reasons. He took a poorly paid position as official archivist and registrar at the Anna Amalia library . Inaccuracies were proved to him by Goethe , among others , which resulted in his dismissal; he even had to go to prison in March 1782. The charges were finally dropped, not least because of the persistent petitions made to the ducal administration by his daughter Christiane and son Christian August. In consideration of his age, Johann Friedrich Vulpius was reinstated in the civil service, but to a subordinate post in the road administration, of which Goethe was director. The low salary was again insufficient to support the family, which induced his daughter Christiane to look for a job. She received this from Caroline Bertuch as a plasterer at the manufactory specializing in the manufacture of artificial flowers .

Two of his children became more important. These were Christian August, who made a name for himself as a writer, especially with his novel Rinaldo Rinaldini , the robber captain, and Christiane, who later became Christiane von Goethe .
