Johann Georg Albert Duncker (born December 27, 1843 in Hanau , † July 27, 1886 in Kassel ) was a German teacher and librarian .

Life

Albert Duncker attended high school in Hanau from 1852 to 1862, followed by studies of classical philology and history in Marburg and Leipzig . In 1866 he passed the grammar school teacher examination in Marburg and took a position at the grammar school in Hanau. In 1868 he received his doctorate in Marburg. He gave private lessons, published some essays, lectured and got involved in political life by fighting against social democracy. In 1876 he took over the management of the Main and Kinzigbote , a national weekly paper. During his time as a high school teacher, he was also responsible for managing the school library. In 1871 he married Leonore, b. Wagner, who died a year later after giving birth to a daughter. In 1877 Duncker married a second time: Toni, geb. Kraus. In 1878 he moved to the Realgymnasium in Wiesbaden . Here, too, he was historically active.

In April 1880, Duncker switched to library service as the second librarian at the state library in Kassel . In November 1881 he became the first librarian and thus head of the state library. Duncker had two display desks with a selection of rare manuscripts and printed matter and two marble busts by the brothers Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm set up. To raise the cost of making the busts, Duncker gave three public lectures. Above all, however, he succeeded in expanding the library space, which above all made it possible to set up a reading room. In 1886 Duncker received the title of senior librarian.
