Johann Georg Haffner , including Jean Georges Haffner (* 21st September 1775 in Colmar , † 20th April 1830 in Gdansk ) was from the Alsace originating physician and is considered one of the pioneers of the seaside resort Sopot near Gdansk.

Johann Georg Haffner came to what was then the Free City of Danzig with the Grande Armée Napoleon Bonaparte in 1808 and was stationed in the French garrison there as a surgeon with the rank of major. In 1808 in Danzig he married Regina Karoline Bruns, widow of Johann Christoph Böttcher. From 1811 he also worked as a general practitioner in Gdansk. He also ran a bathing establishment. As a part-time job, he also carried out vaccinations against cowpox . When the French army left the region in 1814, Haffner stayed in Danzig.

At his request, Haffner received from the Prussian government in 1823 the permission and the exclusive right to build and operate a bathing establishment with a spa in Sopot. The land on the beach required for the realization of this project was leased to him on a long lease . He then built a spa hotel and a number of baths on the site at his own expense. With this pioneering act, he laid the foundation for the later development of Sopot into a glamorous seaside resort and health resort with international flair.
