Johann Georg Steiner (painter, 1746)

Johann Georg Steiner (* 1746 in Sonneberg ; † 1830 ibid) was a German painter, song poet and (folk) song collector in Sonneberg in Thuringia.

Johann Georg Steiner comes from a family of craftsmen. Like his father, he was a box painter , for whom the term bismuth painter prevailed in the 18th century . In addition to chip boxes, bismuth painters painted toys and miniature furniture, painted pictures and created murals in churches and castles. However, Johann Georg did not become particularly well known as a painter, but rather through his extensive handwritten collection of his own folk song texts and those of others. As early as 1858, the linguist August Schleicher (1821–1868) published some of the songs from Steiner's collection, the original of which has been lost. Further copies of songs from Steiner's collection could no longer be published during Schleicher's lifetime and came to the Sonneberg City Archives in 1913, were preserved over both World Wars and were rediscovered there by the Thuringian folk music researcher Horst Traut , so that Steiner's collection has largely survived.

The Steinersche Liedertextsammlung - a link between the collections of the middle of the 18th century and the extensive collections of folk songs of the 19th century - is one of the most important documents of the folk song culture at the end of the 18th century, because it was made by its author for his own constant use In contrast to other collections, it does not come from academic circles, but from the class of the petty bourgeoisie and craftsmen, thus reproducing the repertoire of social songs from this class at the time of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution very authentically. The Steiner's collection also contains several song texts that are nowhere else or only rarely documented.

Johann Georg's older brother was the mayor of Sonneberg and chronicler Johann Martin Steiner .
