Johann Gottlieb Wenig (Russian Богда́н Богданович Вениг ; * 1837 in Reval ; † 1872 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian painter of Baltic-German descent.

He was the son of the music teacher, organist and violinist at the Protestant Nikolaikirche in Reval Gottlieb Friedrich Wenig and Agathe Emilie Fabergé, aunt of the jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé . His older brother Carl Gottlieb Wenig (Russian Карл Богданович Вениг, 1830–1908) was also a painter.

Johann Gottlieb Wenig studied painting at the St. Petersburg Art Academy at the chair for historical painting under Professor Fjodor Bruni . As a student, he was awarded silver and gold medals several times.

In November 1863 he took part in the "Rebellion of the Fourteen" - a protest action by the academy's graduates against the imposed classicism in the painting competition on the occasion of the centenary of the academy. From 1863 to 1871 he was a member of the "Sankt Petersburg painter's cooperative". He became known as a portrait painter.

In the 1870s he worked with Ivan Nikolajewitsch Kramskoi and Nikolai Andrejewitsch Koschelew on the painting work in the dome of Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior .
