Nikolai Andreevich Koschelew

Nikolai Andrejewitsch Koschelew ( Russian: Никола́й Андре́евич Ко́шелев ; born May 3, 1840 in Serman, Penza Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 1918 in Petrograd , Soviet Russia ) was a Russian painter , graphic artist and wall painter .

Nikolai Koschelew was born into a Russian peasant family who fell into serfdom . He spent his childhood in Arsamas .

Education

Koschelev began studying art in 1851, initially for two years, in Nizhny Novgorod . He continued his studies in the Russian city of Kazan in 1856 , where he lived until 1860.

During this time he mainly worked in the field of church painting in Russian Orthodox churches , which are designed and built according to Byzantine architecture and decorated according to Byzantine art . Koschelew designed church walls accordingly .

From 1860 he moved to Saint Petersburg and from 1863 he devoted himself extensively to studying history painting at the Russian Art Academy under the direction of Fyodor Antonovich Bruni .

Artistic creation

From 1865 Koschelew participated artistically in the completion of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow and was appointed professor in 1878 .

From 1878 he went traveling, visiting Berlin , Dresden , Frankfurt am Main , Vienna and Paris . Koschelev spent the longest period abroad from 1880, remaining in Rome as a year-old . After his return to Russia he lived alternately in Moscow and Saint Petersburg and was active as a lecturer , functioned as head of technical drawing at the Baron Alexander von Stieglitz School . From 1880 Koschelev was an inspector at the Stroganov School of Art and Technology ( Vchutemas ) for a decade .

In addition to this activity, Koschelew was also involved in the restoration of St. Isaac's Cathedral and the Church of the Resurrection of St. Petersburg . Also on the design of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Warsaw .

In 1891 he went on trips to Egypt and the Middle East . In Jerusalem , he created twenty images of the Passion of Christ in the Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Jerusalem . Back in Russia, he helped found the Nizhny Novgorod Art Museum in 1896.

Nikolai Koschelew died in Petrograd (Saint Petersburg) in 1918. There is no reliable information about the last years of his life.

Christian art

On the whole, Koschelev's works are shaped by the piety of Orthodox Christianity . His Christian art can now be admired in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and in the Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg .
