Live and act

Johann Heinrich Bauer was a son of Johann Daniel Baur (born May 27, 1700 in Esslingen ; † March 10, 1774) and his wife Anna Gesa, née Neuhaus (born October 27, 1713 in Wilster ; † December 17, 1737 in Altona) . The mother was a daughter of Heinrich Neuhaus, who worked from 1735 as a merchant, in 1713 as a councilor and in 1734 as the second mayor of Altona.

Baur's father came from near Stuttgart and emigrated to Altona, where he married on November 30, 1729. At the time of the birth of his son Johann Heinrich, he was already a respected and wealthy man. Baur went to school and then traveled through Holland, France and England. Then he joined the company founded by his grandfather Neuhaus, which his father had continued. Here he worked as a businessman and underwriter. Together with his companion Peter Rode (1718–1797), who had been a member of the council since 1785 and was Deputy Mayor of Altona in 1794, he managed the company from 1761 to 1794 as "(Joh. Hinr.) Baur & Rode".

On December 18, 1759, Baur married Maria Magdalena Droop in Hamburg (* May 23, 1742 in Hamburg; † July 11, 1810 in Altona). She was a daughter of the Hamburg merchant Johann Friedrich Droop (1761) and his wife Helena Lucretia, née Hanker (* July 30, 1717 in Hamburg; † July 2, 1784 there). The couple Baur had the sons Johann Daniel Baur , Georg Friedrich Baur and Johann Heinrich (1767-1807), who worked as a businessman in Altona, joined the Commerz-Collegium in Altona in 1803 and in 1804 was appointed commercial director of the Schleswig-Holsteinische Speciesbank . The Baur couple also had three daughters.

As a merchant, Baur significantly expanded the trading business and earned a considerable fortune. In 1794 he took his sons Johann Heinrich and Georg Friedrich into the company. A little later they carried it on as “JH & CF Baur”. In 1774, Baur received the Kaden estate as an inheritance from his father and held it until 1776.

From 1762 Baur was a member of the Altona Commerz College. After Immanuel Schütze replaced his father as first Altona mayor in 1772 and the position of second mayor was vacant, Baur took over this position on October 22, 1772 as commercial mayor. He was also appointed to the Council of Justice at the same time, and on January 29, 1782 to the Conference Council. On January 28, 1813 he received the Dannebrogorden. He is buried in the family grave in the former western churchyard of the Christian church.
