Johann Heinrich Custer
Johann Heinrich Custer (born December 21, 1757 in Altstätten ; † October 24, 1818 in Rheineck , St. Gallen ) was a Swiss yarn and linen dealer and founder of a bank.
Live and act
Johann Heinrich Custer was a son of the businessman Hans Jakob (1717–1792) and his wife Margarethe Barbara, a daughter of the businessman Conrad Messmer. In connection with his trading business, he probably founded the J. H. Custer Bank in Rheineck in 1799. In Altstätten and Rheineck he held various parish and church offices. 1804–1812 he was a judge and St. Gallen councilor.
At the beginning of the 19th century, his bank was considered one of the most important commercial banks in Eastern Switzerland, but then began to focus more and more on pure banking. In 1919 the company merged with the Zurich private bank Riggenbach & Co. and went bankrupt in 1934.
