Johann I (Palatinate-Simmern)
Johann I von Pfalz-Simmern (born May 15, 1459 in Starkenburg ; † January 27, 1509 in Starkenburg) was Count Palatine and Duke of Simmern .
Life
Johann was the son and successor of Friedrich I von Simmern (1417–1480) from his marriage to Margarete von Egmond (1436–1486), daughter of Duke Arnold von Geldern .
Johann I took care of the expansion of the Simmern residence . He laid the foundation stone for St. Stephen's Church (or expanded a previous building) and the town hall. He is also responsible for the completion of the Franciscan monastery of St. Wolfgang (Barfüßerkloster) in Bad Kreuznach .
In 1480 he inherited Simmern - Sponheim from his father . In the Landshut War of Succession , Johann managed to maintain neutrality, which, in contrast to the Electoral Palatinate , saved his country from devastation. As a result of the war, he was also able to expand his country to include parts of the front county of Sponheim. Duke Johann was buried in the newly built princely crypt in St. Stephen's Church.
Marriage and offspring
In 1481 Johann married Johanna (1464–1521), daughter of Count Johann II of Nassau-Saarbrücken , with whom he had the following children:
- Friedrich (* / † 1490)
- Johann II. (1492–1557), Count Palatine of Simmern
