Johann I (Anhalt)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann I. Prince of Anhalt-Bernburg , († June 5, 1291 ), was a German sovereign from the Ascanian dynasty .

Life

Johann I was the eldest son of Prince Bernhard I of Anhalt-Bernburg and Sophie, daughter of King Abel of Denmark . After the father's death in 1287 , the inheritance was divided up among the sons, as is customary in the Ascanian household. Johann then ruled the Principality of Anhalt-Bernburg together with his younger brother Bernhard II. The younger brothers, Albrecht and Heinrich, devoted themselves to the clergy and waived all claims. Rudolf, the youngest son of Bernhard I, was possibly no longer alive at the time of his father's death.

Johann remained unmarried and childless throughout his life. After his death in 1291, his brother and co-regent Bernhard II became the sole ruler of Anhalt-Bernburg.
