Bernhard II, Prince of Anhalt-Bernburg (* around 1260; † after December 26, 1323 ) was a ruling Anhalt sovereign from the Ascanian dynasty .

Life

He was the third son of Bernhard I of Anhalt-Bernburg and his wife Princess Sophie, daughter of King Abel of Denmark .

After the death of his father in 1287 , Bernhard inherited the Principality of Anhalt-Bernburg together with his eldest brother Johann I. However, the land was not divided between the brothers, but ruled together until Johann died four years later ( 1291 ) and Bernhard was sole ruler of Anhalt-Bernburg was. In 1300 he assumed the title of Count von Bernburg. A year later his princely title was confirmed.

After the older line of Anhalt-Aschersleben died out ( 1316 ), he also inherited their princely title. In addition, he was enfeoffed in December 1316 by Halberstadt Bishop Albrecht I - his brother - with the house and town of Aschersleben . The Bernburger thus recognized the feudal sovereignty of the bishop, which led to long-term disputes between the Anhalt residents and the Halberstadt diocese over the Aschersleben legacy. Two years later, King Ludwig IV enfeoffed Bernhard II with all the property that Otto II von Anhalt-Aschersleben had had as a fief from the Reich. In 1322 the dispute over Aschersleben between Bernhard III. von Anhalt-Bernburg and Halberstadt Bishop Albrecht II to a bitter legal battle. Although even Emperor Ludwig IV the Bavarian intervened several times in favor of the House of Anhalt-Bernburg , the final decision was made in 1333 : Aschersleben remained with the Diocese of Halberstadt .

On September 27, 1320 Bernhard became Count Palatine of Saxony and Count of the County of Brehna in Frankfurt am Main . He died three years later.

Marriage and offspring

On December 27, 1302 he married Helena (* around 1271, † August 9, 1315 ), daughter of Wizlaw II. Prince of Rügen and widow of Johann III. Prince of Mecklenburg .
