from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann I. Debranin ( Bulgarian Йоан Дебърски ; † 1037 ) was a Bulgarian clergyman of the 11th century .

He was bishop under Tsar Samuil , and remained in office afterwards, making him the first Slavic Archbishop of Ohrid after the fall of the First Bulgarian Empire . Thereafter the area belonged to the Byzantine province of Bulgaria .

According to the French historian du Cange , Johann was born near the village of Debar in what is now Macedonia . When Emperor Basil II conquered Bulgaria in 1018, he decided to subjugate the previously autocephalous Bulgarian Orthodox Church and established the Archdiocese of Ohrid . This made Johann the first archbishop of Ohrid. Before that he was hegumen in a monastery in Debar. He remained in office until his death in 1037.
