Johann Jacob Steinmann (born September 17, 1800 in Basel , † June 20, 1844 ibid) was a Swiss draftsman, lithographer and landscape painter .

Life

Born the son of master tailor Georg Friedrich Steinmann, Johann Jacob studied lithography with Godefroy Engelmann in Mulhouse , Alsace , from 1821 , and continued his apprenticeship with Alois Senefelder , the inventor of lithography. Since 1821 he corresponded with the draftsman and graphic artist Friedrich Salathé .

Steinmann signed a contract with the representative of the Brazilian government in Paris in 1825 and came to Rio de Janeiro in October 1825. He married Phoebe Georgine Harris from the Netherlands. There he was employed in the military print shop. He became the first lithographer in Brazil to print maps and pictures. He taught six students. In 1830, after the end of the five-year contract, Steinmann set up his own lithography company with the permission of Emperor Pedro I. He also opened a soap factory, unfortunately with little success.

On February 12, 1833, Steinmann returned to Europe after spending more than seven years in Brazil. In 1834 and in the following years, albums with lithographed views of Brazil appeared in Basel, which Steinmann created based on the sketches drawn during his stay.

He died at the age of 44.
