life and work

After completing his commercial training in Strasbourg, Schuster came to Basel in 1856, where he found a job in the private bank «von Speyr» and in 1867 became a partner and head of the bank. Schuster played a key role in founding the Basler Bankievereins and expanded it into a major international bank. From 1881 to 1891 he presided over their board of directors. Under his leadership, the Bankverein played an important role in the reorganization of former family businesses into joint stock companies and their concentration into large companies. Schuster also sat on the boards of large Swiss and foreign industrial and financial companies.

In his first marriage (1863) Schuster was married to Anna Elisabeth von Speyr and in his second marriage (1886) to Johanna Burckhardt (1848–1906).

Schuster found his final resting place in the Wolfgottesacker cemetery in Basel.
