Johann Josef Imseng
Johann Josef Imseng (born June 6, 1806 in Saas-Fee , † July 5, 1869 in Saas-Almagell ) was a pastor in the Swiss Saas Valley , alpinist and the first skier in Switzerland.
Mayeng was a pioneer and promoter of the emerging tourism. He hosted tourists in his parsonage, led mountain tours and campaigned for the construction of hotels. On his advice, the first hotels were built in the Saas Valley in the middle of the 19th century. On December 20, 1849, Imseng drove from Saas-Fee to Saas-Grund with wooden boards he had built himself in order to be able to help a dying person more quickly. The boards were attached to his shoes with straps and cords. His ski run was the first in Switzerland. The mountaineering priest drowned in Mattmarksee in 1869 . A statue on the village square in Saas-Fee commemorates him. From there, Imseng looks out over the Hotel "Dom", the oldest hotel in town; this was built in 1881 on his initiative.
