Johann Kalliauer (born February 26, 1953 in Wels ) is President of the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor , an Austrian trade union official and a social democrat.

Life

Johann Kalliauer was born the son of a railroad worker and a saleswoman. He still lives with his family in his parents' house, is married and has two grown children.

On the recommendation of his teachers, Johann Kalliauer switched to high school after just one year and graduated in 1971. Even at high school, he was politically active and was elected head of school. After graduating from high school, Kalliauer studied at the JKU in Linz , graduating with a doctorate in law. He sees himself as a beneficiary of the educational offensive with which the Social Democratic Chancellor Bruno Kreisky made higher education possible for children from working-class households.

Career

After completing his studies, Johann Kalliauer was brought to the union by Fritz Freyschlag , the president of the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor and state secretary of the union of private employees (GPA), Kalliauer subsequently headed the legal department of the GPA and fought in this position in front of and outside of court for the Employees' rights. After more than ten years as head of the legal department, he became national secretary of the GPA in 1999.

Johann Kalliauer has been active in the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor since 1982, initially as a Social Democratic Chamber Councilor and later as Vice President. In October 2003 he was elected President of the Upper Austria Chamber of Labor to succeed Hubert Wipplinger . He is also vice-president of the Federal Chamber of Labor , and in September 2009 he was appointed chairman of the Social Democratic Union (FSG) group in the Federal Chamber of Labor.

On January 16, 2016 he was elected chairman of the SPÖ Upper Austria. After a short term in office, he handed over the chairmanship to Birgit Gerstorfer on June 18, 2016 .

On September 7, 2016, Johann Kalliauer was awarded the Great Gold Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic .
